Onto.PT: Automatic Construction of a Lexical Ontology for Portuguese

    Get PDF
This ongoing research presents an alternative to the man- ual creation of lexical resources and proposes an approach towards the automatic construction of a lexical ontology for Portuguese. Tex- tual sources are exploited in order to obtain a lexical network based on terms and, after clustering and mapping, a wordnet-like lexical on- tology is created. At the end of the paper, current results are shown

Evaluating Synonym and Antonym Acquisition from a Portuguese Masked Language Model

    Get PDF
As for many other tasks in the domain of Natural Language Processing, transformer-based models have been explored in the acquisition of semantic relations, and are useful for the automatic creation or enrichment of knowledge bases [1], e.g., represented in RDF. Towards this, they can be used for completing lexico-syntactic patterns, in a shortcut to earlier methods of relation acquisition from corpora [12]. When focused on lexico-semantic relations, they can be useful for enriching lexical knowledge bases (LKBs) like WordNet [4]

    Erato: Automatizing Poetry Evaluation

We present Erato, a framework designed to facilitate the automated evaluation of poetry, including that generated by poetry generation systems. Our framework employs a diverse set of features, and we offer a brief overview of Erato's capabilities and its potential for expansion. Using Erato, we compare and contrast human-authored poetry with automatically-generated poetry, demonstrating its effectiveness in identifying key differences. Our implementation code and software are freely available under the GNU GPLv3 license

Assessing Lexical-Semantic Regularities in Portuguese Word Embeddings

Models of word embeddings are often assessed when solving syntactic and semantic analogies. Among the latter, we are interested in relations that one would find in lexical-semantic knowledge bases like WordNet, also covered by some analogy test sets for English. Briefly, this paper aims to study how well pretrained Portuguese word embeddings capture such relations. For this purpose, we created a new test, dubbed TALES, with an exclusive focus on Portuguese lexical-semantic relations, acquired from lexical resources. With TALES, we analyse the performance of methods previously used for solving analogies, on different models of Portuguese word embeddings. Accuracies were clearly below the state of the art in analogies of other kinds, which shows that TALES is a challenging test, mainly due to the nature of lexical-semantic relations, i.e., there are many instances sharing the same argument, thus allowing for several correct answers, sometimes too many to be all included in the dataset. We further inspect the results of the best performing combination of method and model to find that some acceptable answers had been considered incorrect. This was mainly due to the lack of coverage by the source lexical resources and suggests that word embeddings may be a useful source of information for enriching those resources, something we also discuss

Fotossensibilidade como Manifestação Inicial de Infeção por Vírus da Imunodeficiência Humana

Photosensitivity is characterized by an abnormal response to non-ionizing radiation, disclosing a variety of morphological patterns, which reflect their different etiologies. We describe the case of a man presenting with a photosensitive dermatosis with no apparent exogenous cause and refractory to multiple treatments. Phototests revealed a reduction in minimal erythema dose to UVB. Laboratory tests in order to start azathioprine, showed a positive test for HIV and a diagnosis of AIDS (high viral load and low TCD4+ cells). A few months after starting antiretroviral therapy photosensitivity resolved completely. Photosensitivity affects up to 5% of HIV-positive patients, mostly due to drug photosensitivity, but it has also been reported as the presenting sign. The authors emphasize the clinical association between HIV infection and photosensitivity which has been increasingly recognized, although it is still poorly characterized from a clinical and photobiological point of view.

PAPEL: A lexical ontology for Portuguese

    Get PDF
PAPEL is a lexical resource for natural language processing (NLP) of Portuguese which is being built by Linguateca, based on processing a major commercial Portuguese dictionary, the Dicionário da Língua Portuguesa (DLP) developed and owned by the largest Portuguese dictionary publisher, Porto Editora. As far as we know, PAPEL is the first lexical ontology built by semi-automatic means for Portuguese. We are currently working on CAUSADOR-DE/RESULTADO-DE, TODO-DE/PARTE-DE and MEIO-PARA/FINALIDADE-DE semantic relations, that can be extracted using the PEN parser and specific grammars consisting of string patterns

Bridging the Clinic-Home Divide in Muscular Rehabilitation

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a major worldwide problem that regularly affects up to a third of the general population. In the US alone, the market for physical therapy was valued at ~32 B USD in 2015, recently growing at ~6% YoY. Besides the direct impact in the quality of life and cost of treatment, MSDs accounted for one-third of days lost due to work-related ill health and injury in countries such as the US, UK and Finland, with ~20% of leaves of absence due to MSD injuries being above a 1-month period. To help mitigate these issues, in this chapter, we describe a novel biofeedback system designed to support part of the rehabilitation processes at home, further extending the state of the art with an app-driven and cloud-based approach. This approach enables the therapists to remotely monitor the progress of the patients and near instant adjustment of the training program from the clinic. The system consists of low-cost wearable devices for electromyography (EMG), a set of user-friendly smartphone apps, and a cloud-based service that allows the patient to have a remote evaluation of his/her performance, handled by the clinical therapist that prescribed the treatment
